Branding  Our School

map

The name 'Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate' embraces the mana (respect) of Sir Edmund Hillary - our most famous New Zealander.

When the Board approached Sir Ed asking permission to use his name for our collegiate. They said 'it would be a great priviledge if he permitted his name to be used'. Sir Ed's reply was 'that is was a priviledge that we wanted his name for the collegiate.

Our logo has strong links with the Pacific. The conch shell in the centre calls all members of our school community together to strive 'towards new horizons' - just as it has summoned generations of Pacific peoples together in the past. The circular logo includes all points of the compass, where many cultures come together from different directions to be celebrated as valued members of the community.

The logo has been incorporated into the layout and architecture of the Collegiate. At the hub of the school is a large circular courtyard that symbolises a fishhook and 'anchors' the Collegiate. The Junior and Middle school buildings are shaped like waka(canoes) that point toward the Pacific where they were originally launched in voyages of exploration and discovery.

The colours of the logo represent colours of the 3 school uniforms, gold Junior School; Blue Middle School and Maroon Senior School.

On May 2010 Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate secured Sir Ed's house from Remuera. To manoeuver the house up the narrow driveway it was cut into 4 sections, moved to in the grounds of Andrews Removal and Transport where it was placed together and stored.

In February 2011 the house was brought to the grounds of the collegiate and placed onto the concrete pad that had been specially laid.  The house will be restored to it orginal design. Students from MIT Building Department have also assisted with the building.

It is our hope that Hillary House is restored and preserved and made available to students within the Collegiate and the people of New Zealand to enjoy and learn about Sir Edmund Hillary, his life, his experiences, his work and his values. The House is to be established as a Leadership Centre to benefit students of the collegiate and the wider New Zealand.

A Trust has been established and one of its roles is to include the development of educational programmes in leadership and motivation to enable participants to be confident and effective contributors to and leaders within their local communities, New Zealand and globally. In addition the Trust will develop and maintain links with Nepal which Sir Edmund Hillary was involved. We know that Sir Edmund Hillary was particularly keen to continue this. The programme development is commencing to create the programmes outlined in the trust deed.
